Black Skin Directory launches to connect women of colour with experienced therapists

An online directory has been developed to help women of colour find aesthetic therapists and practitioners experienced in working with darker skins.

The Black Skin Directory (due to go live on February 2 as PB went to press), was conceived by aesthetic therapist Dija Ayodele following research she carried out, which found 92% of women of colour struggle to find skincare professionals experienced and confident in treating darker skin tones. A particular concern was treatments such as laser and peels, which can react differently on darker tones and pose potential risks compared to lighter skins.

The directory will launch with around 20 practitioners listed in London and the South East and aims to give professionals the opportunity to showcase their skills and promote their business to women in this demographic, for a monthly fee of £20.

The site will also provide a platform for education, training and events to help champion the needs of skin of colour in the beauty and aesthetic industries.

“Research in the last couple of years showed that British women spend more than £110 a month on their appearance, with women of colour spending an additional £140 due to lack of choice or awareness about options,” said Ayodele. “This confirms that, despite an uneven playing field, women of colour have big spending power. The Black Skin Directory will help practitioners connect directly with this market.”
