Want to scoop one of the most prestigious make-up awards in the industry? Then put your skills to the test at the Warpaint Make-up Championships at PB London on February 25–26.

This year’s categories are 1988 themed, in keeping with the London show’s 30th birthday celebrations, and judges are looking for artists who excel in creativity, styling, use of colour and overall impact.

For example, for the Real Beauty: spring wedding 1988 category, contestants need to create not one but two looks on their model, using just four key products, in the space of three hours.

Entry price: £25 for professionals and £10 for students

Prizes: Winners will be featured in Professional Beauty magazine and receive a trophy and an “experience with a judge” training prize.

Categories and themes:

• Runway: Christian Lacroix

• Film & TV: character from a 1988 Oscar-nominated movie

• Bodypainting: 1988 – the summer of love; acid house and the rave generation

• Real Beauty: spring wedding 1988

Deadline: Thursday, February 22. PB

THE COLLEGE CUP IS UP FOR GRABS

The highest-placing college across the Warpaint competition categories will be given the College Cup award. Colleges are awarded points for students who place first, second or third.

TIPS FROM THE JUDGES: three mistakes all competitors make

1. Not cleaning their tools “Hygiene is the first thing I look at. You should think about your personal hygiene, and the cleanliness of your kit, work space and application,” explains competition judge Hannah Wing, hair and make-up designer.

2. Forgetting to pack all items requested “Pack your kit days before the competition so that there’s plenty of time to add in anything you’ve initially forgotten. Those who pack ahead of time are calm and focused,” says competition judge Jennie Roberts, who is the founder and CEO of Paintopia.

3. Not practising their look “You need to trial and refine your look before the competition and have a real understanding of the products you’re using. Your work in the lead up will show in what you produce on the day,” adds Wing.
