SAGE advice

Patch Testing

1. Test all products

“A patch test should include everything you’re going to use on the client, so the adhesive and removal products. You need to check they’re not allergic to them in case you need to remove the product”, says Jennifer Turner, master trainer for Lash Bomb, which is distributed by Beauty Concepts International.

2. It’s not for everyone

“We don’t perform lash lifts or extension treatments on pregnant or breast-feeding clients because if they suffered a reaction, they wouldn’t be able to take the medication a doctor would prescribe, such as antihistamines”, explains Sonia Gapper, head educator in the South West for The Eyelash Emporium.

3. Sensitivities can develop

“Almost all eyelash tint products contain an ingredient that may cause an allergic reaction in a small number of users. The best means of preventing such a reaction is to conduct a skin allergy test on the client every time they come into your salon because sensitivity can develop suddenly with repeated use”, says Fiona Bale, Hive’s area sales manager.

4. Be extra safe

“Our lash adhesive doesn’t go on the eye, just the lashes, so our insurance doesn’t require us to patch test it. However, if you’re concerned, you could put a couple of lashes on each of the client’s eyes and leave them for 48 hours as a means of patch testing”, says Angela Thiagarajah, product developer and training development manager for Nouveau Lashes.

5. Don’t forget eye health

“You should always assess a client’s eye in person before doing the service. If you notice any redness, dryness, flakiness or discharge then it’s advisable not to perform the treatment. Ask the client to seek advice from their GP and reschedule the appointment for a later date”, explains Zachary Falb, global master trainer for Novalash.
