Beauty therapists urged to weigh in following JCCP decision to drop them from registers for injectables

News

The Government-approved Joint Council for Cosmetic Practitioners (JCCP) has removed beauty therapists from its registers for Level 7 treatments including dermal fillers.

The major change in policy follows significant backlash from medics to the registers, which were launched in March, and included one for medics, and a second for non-medics, who were, at the time, permitted to inject dermal fillers providing they had trained to Level 7 and were overseen by a medical practitioner.

The council said in a statement: “The JCCP has now determined that Level 7 treatments that involve injectables and dermal fillers should be performed only by relevantly trained, experienced and proficient healthcare professionals who are registered on part 1 of the JCCP Register.”

JCCP chair Professor David Sines told Professional Beauty the decision was made “on the basis of consideration of potential risks, lack of evidence, lack of training courses, and no non-healthcare professionals even contacting us to enquire about registering.”

He said the U-turn was also a result of renewed Government interest in the safety of cosmetic procedures.

Caroline Larissey, quality and standards manager at National Hairdressers’ Federation and JCCP trustee, told PB that while she supports JCCP principles, she opposed the decision.

“I suggested alternatives, which were rejected, and, as the only trustee representing the beauty industry, I was outvoted”, she added.

“This seems to be a step backwards leading to beauty therapists feeling that their voices have not been acknowledged.”

She said the JCCP will hold a meeting in mid to late September with key beauty industry organisations and representatives.

“It’s more important than ever that our industry agrees on a framework of robust qualifications at this level, which ensure that beauty therapists can show they are professionally trained and qualified while providing professional recognition and respect for their skills”, she added.

Meanwhile, it remains legal for beauty therapists to inject, because the JCCP registers are currently voluntary. However, Sines said he believes they will eventually be mandated into law.
