Hair and beauty sector facing “existential crisis”, says CBI Economics report
Polished: “The capped rate of 13% needs cutting to at least 10%. The Netherlands lowered VAT to 6% in the 2000s for labourintensive services, resulting in the creation of 4,000 sector jobs. Contacting your local MPs as we have done may help to get our voices heard.”
Spa in the City Day Spa and Beauty Salon Glasgow: “Yes paying your team, PAYE, a landlord and then VAT is tricky to navigate for sure especially when there is next to nothing to claim back in VAT. I think the VAT should be reviewed for our industry. It is steep when you get to claim very little vat back ”
Calithea Studios: “Done, MP emailed. So glad that someone is taking action. The amount of surveys I’ve filled out and organisations I’ve approached and that seems to be as far as it goes. I’m a beauty therapist and I’m glad this is not just all about hairdressing and beauty is also included. VAT is crippling, I can’t give pay rises, can’t put up prices due to self-employed-model salons all around and rising tax and stock prices.”
@kmp_skin:“There are multiple factors affecting beauty businesses – changes In NIC mean people aren’t inclined to employ and grow, VAT implications, but also from April there will be a huge hike in rates for businesses operating from retail spaces. Along with rises in utilities, cost of living and products, most salons won’t be able to raise prices by 30%, which is what this evens out at. Running a business in the UK is becoming unviable.”

Education is power
@twinoaksbeauty:“Education and re-education is so important in our industry. I always invest in something I completely trust after looking into all options and learning the dos and don’ts inside out. That means not jumping onto fads and waiting to offer a technology or technique ‘til I can afford one of the best and safest. Learn cheap, offer cheap = cheap, unsafe results, unhappy clients and future disasters.”

What does the employment rights bill mean for salons?
@o.i.c.beauty:“This is great news. Improving the rights and conditions of people working in our industry can only have a positive impact long term. We have highly skilled, knowledgeable workers who should be valued and appreciated by their employers, not given zerohours contracts. As an employer ourselves, we support these changes to improve working conditions for all. As a mostly female-led industry, these changes should help support working mums and help give stability to our workforce, hopefully keeping more amazing people in our industry. ”
