EDITOR’S COMMENT
With recruitment still a challenge and rising costs placing extra pressure on salon and spa owners, it’s never been more important to build and nurture a happy team. After all, therapists who feel supported at work will pass that positive energy on to their clients, meaning both are more likely to stay loyal.
One of the most successful routes to building a strong team seems to be recognising the individual strengths of each member and allowing them the freedom to develop these and use them to support one another.
As Hellen Ward explains in her column on page 30, “embracing what they are good at, honing it, developing it and then marketing it to its utmost potential is the key to ensuring people feel valued enough to stay”.
One business owner hitting the mark is Jolene Rees, whose team at Stockton salon Innovations won Spa/Salon Team of the Year at the Professional Beauty Awards in July.
Rees has a philosophy of really getting to know each team member during their induction period to find out where their passions lie and help them to develop in those areas with a “nurture rather than dictate” attitude. Read how she makes it work in our lead interview on page 39.
In fact, you can find out how all 14 winners made it to the top in our winner profiles. From the standout TikTok campaign that swung it for The Spa at Carden, winner of our new marketing award, to therapist winner Estefania Vallecillo Rios’s ability to connect with her clients and create bespoke treatment experiences, read all their stories from page 57.
Of course, it’s just as important to support clients as therapists and our hair removal feature looks at how you can make this important service accessible to trans clients, covering everything from the right laser wavelengths to the appropriate language to ensure they feel welcomed in your salon. Find out more on page 43.
