Spas and pro brands join global movement to cut plastics usage

News

Several skincare brands and spas have launched new eco-friendly initiatives to help tackle the environmental plastic crisis.

Titanic Spa in Huddersfield has launched a “no plastic” drive to cut down the waste it creates after staff discovered more than 500 plastic bottles in nearby Lowestwood Pond during a clearing project with local volunteers.

The business has stopped using single-use plastic bottles, cups and straws, providing recyclable paper alternatives to clients instead.

Lindsay Jones, owner of The Apocathery Salon in Doncaster, said her business runs a similar initiative, and added, “To further promote our reuse and recycle ethos we offer our clients a recycling incentive: bring back five used Comfort Zone products purchased from us in house and receive a £15 voucher to spend on a treatment of choice.”

Meanwhile, organic skincare brand Ren has pledged to be zero waste by 2021 by making all packaging refillable or reusable. The brand has also partnered with Surfrider Foundation and its UK affiliate Surfers Against Sewage to help keep beaches plastic-free. Marine skincare brand Thalgo has also long been an advocate of reducing plastic waste in the ocean, having held many beach clean-ups in recent years.

Last year, the International Institute for Anti-Ageing (IIAA) announced that all Advanced Nutrition Programme’s supplements would be packaged in 100% recyclable materials to be more eco-friendly.
