SALONS NEED TO BE inclusive spaces

The importance of inclusivity and diversity cannot be underestimated in a salon environment. We have found that by making intentional adaptations, we can ensure that everyone feels comfortable, valued and cared for.

Silent treatments

Visiting a salon is an opportunity for clients to relax and unwind, but sometimes the social aspect of beauty treatments can be overwhelming.

Offering “silent treatments” as an option during booking allows clients to communicate their preferences for a quiet, calming experience. We have found that this simple adjustment has created a more comfortable environment at our salon for those who may find small talk draining or who seek solitude as part of their self-care routine.

Private and personalised service

Some clients may feel uneasy entering a busy salon or waiting in a communal area. Whether due to anxiety, sensory sensitivities or personal preference, offering a designated safe space can make a world of difference.

We have taken this concept a step further by creating our very own Soul Sanctuary. This separate part of the salon features its own entrance, exit, waiting room, treatment room and toilet facility.

Clients who prefer a more secluded experience can use this area, enjoying treatments away from the hustle and bustle of a busy salon. This caters to individuals who may struggle with social difficulties or mental health concerns, providing them with a safe, relaxed atmosphere. The area is decorated differently with a soft grey rather than a more clinical appearance. Clients are able to personalise their experience by choosing their own aromatherapy oils for our diffusers along with calm music for a more subdued and tranquil ambiance.

By introducing the Soul Sanctuary, we’ve been able to reach a wider audience and accommodate an additional 200-plus clients who might otherwise have avoided salons altogether. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with clients expressing gratitude for the judgment-free, understanding environment we’ve created.

This ethos is also reflected in our marketing, which has helped capture a broader audience, including those who previously felt uncomfortable entering a salon.

Alternatively, implementing sensory-friendly hours where the environment is quieter, and scents or harsh lighting are minimised can help include those clients who need minimal sensory stimulation.

Accessible spaces

Physical accessibility is a fundamental aspect of inclusivity, including wheelchair-accessible entrances, dedicated parking spaces and wide walkways that allow easy manoeuvring. Treatment stations should also be adjustable to suit the needs of all clients.

We prioritise understanding our clients’ unique needs by sending out online consultation forms ahead of their visit. This proactive approach enables us to tailor our services, such as offering appointments during quieter hours or making adjustments to the service environment.

If any uncertainties arise, we reach out to clients directly before their appointment to ensure their requirements are fully understood and accommodated. This truly reassures clients that we are there to ensure their journey with us is smooth and stress free.

Gender-inclusive services

Salons should offer gender-neutral services and pricing. Avoid categorising treatments by gender, such as “men’s waxing” or “women’s waxing”, and instead focus on the area or complexity of the treatment offered. Ensure that marketing materials and decor reflect a welcoming environment for clients of all gender identities.

A culture of understanding

Inclusive practices begin with education. By regularly training your team on diversity, equity and inclusion, it ensures they understand the varied needs of your clients. Encouraging open dialogue among staff fosters a culture that celebrates differences.

By adopting these inclusive practices, salons not only enhance their client base but also create meaningful, positive impacts within their communities. At B-unique Beauty and Aesthetics, we’ve seen firsthand the rewards of prioritising inclusivity. The adaptations we’ve made demonstrate that understanding and valuing individuality can transform the salon experience for everyone.
