Do you agree with the new Government plans to direct jobseekers to retrain in beauty?

Alison Heppelstone, owner, Skin Coach Brighouse, West Yorkshire: “I’ve been this in career for over 25 years. It’s a fabulous industry to be in if you have passion and dedication to it. It’s not an ‘easy’ job as some may think.”

Amy Menzies, nail tech and educator, Manchester: “Beauty is not an easy career! You need to build up your skill set and only by working hard will you do that, but it’s wonderful once you get there. Hard work pays off and there are some amazing, wonderful people in the industry.”

Should your salon go dog-friendly?

Natalie George, salon owner, The Makeup Fairy, North East Lincolnshire: “I work from home so my dog is in and out of my salon, not during beauty treatments or make-up appointments though. She’s calming, and the clients love her. I’ve also welcomed other dogs in, but I am careful if any clients have allergies and or aren’t a fan of dogs.” Jen Turner, beauty therapist, Turn Beautiful, Brighton: “We tried it prior to lockdown but the cleaning required to maintain our high standards of hygiene meant we had to limit where we could allow them to go. We also found that cleaning the salon post-visit was, in some cases, taking up more time than the treatment. Too many hygiene risks in our industry to have them sadly, though I’d love to have my dog with me 24/7.”

Do you price treatments differently for friends and family?

Kirsten Steward, advanced facialist, Cambridgeshire: “My mum’s and daughter’s treatments are always free, or part of a birthday or Christmas present (like a course of needling), but absolutely no ‘mates rates’. If they’re a true friend then they will always pay you for the service.”
