EDITOR’S COMMENT
It’s been a time of huge change for the country, with both a new Prime Minister and a new monarch within a matter of days. As the nation remembers the life and achievements of The Queen, attention is also now turning to the early promises of new PM Liz Truss, in particular her plans for tackling the exponential rise in the cost of living, and indeed of doing business.
The beauty associations have been quick to call for support for our sector, specifically for a small business energy price cap, plus grants to support in the face of rising costs. See page 11 for the full list of requests.
The associations cite the huge impact that beauty salons have on keeping our high streets alive as one of the key reasons support is needed, and that impact is borne out in new figures this month that demonstrate that beauty and nail salons are both among the top five types of business leading growth in town centres. Find out more in our story on page 12.
While beauty salons may be on the rise, there’s no denying that a growing proportion of those are homebased businesses. This month we take a closer look at the particular challenges and opportunities that come with setting up on your own in our lead interview with Emily Scullion, whose salon The Brick House Beauty picked up our Mobile/Home-based Beauty Business of the Year award earlier this year. From achieving a work-life balance to how to maintain professional respect from clients, she shares her advice on page 49.
With autumn in full swing, we also look ahead to Christmas this month with a first look at the pro brand gift sets, as well as tips from the experts on how to maximise your bookings and retail sales, including when to place orders for stock and the added extras that will help you land a seasonal sale. Check out the guide from page 78.
