EDITOR’S COMMENT
With salons, spas and therapists still adjusting to the excitement and rush of reopening post-lockdown, clients are continuing to show up with skin, nail and wellbeing issues that have developed as a result of extended time away from your businesses and, in many cases, attempts at home treatments.
Contact allergies, for example, have been a hot topic in the nails world lately and can be caused or exacerbated by home use of systems that should stay in the hands of a trained professional. Our feature on page 61 explores the topic in more depth, outlining the main triggers and what you can do to prevent allergies for your clients and your team.
Hyperpigmentation has also been a cause of concern for clients who were mid-course and our feature on page 48 examines this skin issue, focusing on the differences between hyperpigmentation and melasma, what to cover in consultation, the best ingredients and technologies to use, and the latest products to help.
With most salon and spa businesses having used the time during the recent lockdowns to make significant changes, there’s a lot to take inspiration from, but it can be all too easy to get swayed by the hottest new Instaworthy salon interior or influencer-endorsed treatment and lose sight of the businesses that are really driving our industry forward – those that have stood the test of time, faced multiple hurdles and come out stronger. This issue we celebrate two of those. Our interview on page 43 focuses on the legacy being left by Calcot & Spa’s Cathy Ball as she retires and hands the reins to Fran Rowland, while on page 66, Nikki Smith of The Waxing Station in Stalybridge shares the lessons she’s learned from 25 years in the industry.
