Medics form new association to oppose JCCP registers

A new medical aesthetic organisation has formed to oppose the Joint Council of Cosmetic Practitioners (JCCP)’s decision to allow non-medics such as beauty therapists to join its registers.

The British Association of Aesthetic Nurses, Doctors and Dentists (BAANDD) said the JCCP could serve to lower medical standards in Britain.

BAANDD is described as “a multidisciplinary association whose aim is to deliver high-quality, evidence-based treatments to patients as well as providing ongoing education and support services for its membership”.

Dr Patrick Treacy, president of the Royal Society of Medicine Aesthetic Faculty, is one of the founding members.

Treacy is urging medical colleagues to contemplate their decision before joining the JCCP’s voluntary register, which also includes non-medics such as beauty therapists, believing that many medical aesthetic professionals do not want to be on a register with non-medics who “potentially may decide future protocols within the industry”.

The JCCP’s position is that experienced beauty therapists on its register could inject botox or dermal fillers only under the supervision of a registered clinician, offering an improvement to the current, unregulated market.
