Sometimes it seems the beauty industry is divided into two groups: the majority who train with reputable courses, get insured, and put client care at the heart of what they do – and the others, who cut corners, charge rock bottom prices, and consequently tend to rush clients in and out with little regard for consultation or aftercare. Frustratingly, this second group is also the one that tends to make the headlines – for all the wrong reasons. So, it’s never been more important to raise the profile of the responsible, well-trained professionals who form the majority.

In our microblading feature on page 82, we explore the potential dangers of this semi-invasive procedure in the wrong hands, and discuss how responsible technicians can educate clients and raise their own profiles to stand out from the crowd.

But responsible practice doesn’t end with treatment delivery. With the GDPR deadline looming, the less glamorous side of business management is in the spotlight, as salons and spas race to ensure their data protection complies with the new law. Our software feature on page 65 drills down into exactly what the legislative changes mean for small businesses and how management software can help you get compliant.

One of the best ways to raise your profile as a business or practitioner that does things right is by winning industry awards. The Professional Beauty Regional Awards open for entries on April 4, and offer salons and spas from across the UK the perfect chance to prove they are at the top of their game in terms of treatment skills, client care and innovation.

The winners will go on to the finals of the national PB Awards in 2018 – so for a bit of inspiration before you enter, check out the secrets of success from this year’s national winners in our coverage from page 88, to find out how the UK’s leading businesses are setting themselves apart.
