Facial yoga can improve skin appearance and counteract the signs of ageing

Just 30 minutes of facial yoga a day could help reverse signs of ageing, according to a study published in JAMA Dermatology.

It found that daily exercise sessions can “modestly” improve the signs of ageing by increasing facial fullness and counteracting sub-structural volume loss of fat and muscle.

In the study, dermatologists asked 27 women aged between 40 and 65 with photodamage and mild-to-moderate atrophy to perform 30 minutes of facial exercises for eight weeks to see if it could improve skin appearance, assessing before-and-after photos.

The data found improvements in the participants’ upper and lower cheek fullness and a decrease in their mean estimated age, with an average drop of almost three years among the women who stuck with the programme, from 51 to 48.
