Beauty salons launch local initiatives to help teenagers and the unemployed

UK beauty salons have launched campaigns to help unemployed young adults and wayward teenagers get back on their feet.

Revival Retreat in Glasgow is giving unemployed young adults (aged 18–30) and those who work less than 16 hours a week the chance to learn the Indian head massage technique free of charge. The course usually costs £475 and is fully accredited with VTCT. The salon has been running beauty courses with the Prince’s Trust for several years, resulting in paid employment for several trainees.

Meanwhile, Hidden Beauty Rooms in Marsden, Kirklees, has launched a series of free make-up courses for teenagers after seeing posts on social media about antisocial behaviour in the area.

The Face Forward Make-up Camp teaches teenagers between the ages of 10 and 16 how to apply make-up, as well as special effects such as wounds and other fake injuries.

“The idea is to allow them to learn make-up in the hope it will give them somewhere to go rather than roaming the streets,” said Sadie Cooper, who runs the salon.

The salon has since received backing from Kirklees Council and is thinking about expanding the course to other local areas.
