EDITOR’S COMMENT
While advanced aesthetic treatments and moodboosting complementary therapies may sit at different ends of the beauty spectrum, it’s no secret that both have seen a surge in popularity since the pandemic, and huge strides are being made at Government level this month to boost the professional profile of both.
From the new Government commitment to a date for the aesthetic treatment licensing framework to an APPG report recommending the social prescribing of holistic therapies, changes are underway to recognise the professionals that are setting standards and effecting real change in the lives of their clients and patients. Read the latest on both movements from page 11.
Spring is always a time of change, and this issue we also look ahead to sunnier days and the make-up and nail trends set to accompany them. Get ready for a new twist on some retro Y2K nail styles [see page 61] and some bold graphic looks, mixed in with softer, sultry designs in make-up [page 74].
When it comes to skincare trends, one of the biggest impacting the market at the moment is “skinimalism”. Driven by a greater understanding of active ingredients, paired with a desire to cut costs during the financial crisis, some consumers are paring back their skin routines and reaching for multitasking products that take up less space and budget. But it’s not all bad news for salon retail figures as our feature on page 79 explains. This less-is-more approach opens the door for therapists to use their expertise to craft a bespoke recommendation that clients are more likely to buy into.
With funds tight across the board, we also share advice from some of the most successful UK salon owners about how to weather the storm by making adjustments that will boost your profits without compromising on service. Check out their tips on page 85.
