The news that beauty salons are keeping our British high streets alive (see page 11) will come as no surprise to many in our industry. As retail, banking and other former staples of UK town centres move online, our high streets are evolving into spaces to enjoy an experience rather than to pick up the essentials.

With no way to fully recreate their services digitally, beauty salons are now under pressure to create a sense of theatre and luxury that will keep clients coming back to town centres – particularly in the face of declining customer service from other sectors, as Hellen Ward points out in her column on page 34.

Of course, introducing new skills, services and products can help elevate the salon experience and we’ve got tons of opportunities to do just that at Professional Beauty London in March. Some of the speakers and artists you can see on our Live Stages also share their wisdom throughout this issue, from our interview with renowned nail tech and educator Kirsty Meakin on page 47 to advice from home-salon owner Emily Scullion and session tech Chantelle Vermont in our Ask the Experts section (page 39). You can also check out the highlights from some of the biggest brands at the show on page 56. And, if you don’t know where to start when choosing a brand, we’ve got some expert advice in this issue from The Glass House Retreat manager Melissa Mitchelmore on page 81.

Clearly, it can be hard to plan for change in the midst of rising prices, and, with the industry’s reaction to the new Government Energy Bills Scheme being far from ecstatic (see page 16), this month we also look at ways to reduce costs in some of the most energy-guzzling places – spa heat and water areas. While now may not be the right time to turn down your pool temperature, there are plenty of ways to save energy without compromising on luxury. Hear how spas including Hoar Cross Hall and Whatley Manor are achieving this in our feature on page 52.
