How can I deal with feeling overwhelmed or indecisive when trying to reach my goals?
Each day, do you start off with the best of intentions to chip away at your goals, but never make the progress you need? No matter how many times you’ve said, “I’ll start on Monday” or “this time will be different”, does the loop keep repeating, with you stuck in a place of inaction, overwhelm or indecision?
When we don’t reach our goals, we beat ourselves up, and that makes it harder to try again. This cycle continues and then we end up convincing ourselves that we’re lazy, uncommitted or that we just haven’t got what it takes to succeed, and can become dangerously close to giving up.
But it doesn’t have to be that way because you’re not lazy or incapable, you’re lost. Let me explain. Imagine you’re going on holiday – you’ve picked a nice destination and planned the transfers and hotel meticulously. No matter what, you’ll turn up at the airport in time to catch your flight. You’re completely committed to going because you want what’s at the end – the holiday relaxation and memories.
You’re aligned with why you need a holiday and what needs to happen to get there.
Now, think of one goal that you’re struggling to reach in your business. If you are totally honest, are you as committed energetically, emotionally, and physically to reaching that goal as you were in the holiday example I gave?
It’s all about energetic alignment. When you’re energetically aligned with your goals it creates an unwavering commitment and nothing can get in your way of reaching them. You’ll prioritise what needs to be done over less meaningful tasks, and you’ll make decisions with ease.
Without energetic alignment, you’ll continue to find yourself easily distracted by other things, second-guessing your decisions, and failing to take the steps you need to reach your goal. However, finding energetic alignment isn’t as hard as you think, just follow these three steps:
1. Identify the goal and whose goal it is – is it yours or one you think you should want? Many people I coach are chasing goals that don’t belong to them, either because someone told them it was the next step or they believed it was necessary to succeed.
2. Why do you want it? Our emotional connection to the “why” is so much more powerful than the “what” or “how”. Connecting to our why allows us to overcome inertia and setbacks and keep persevering.
3. What’s the impact of achieving this goal? And what’s the impact of not achieving it – on you, your family, career and mental and physical health. When you’re energetically aligned with your goals, you can achieve anything.
