Home-based beauty salons boom since the start of Covid-19 pandemic

Up to 30% of self-employed beauty therapists have changed how they work since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, with many choosing to convert garages and rooms in their homes, or to go mobile with their businesses, since the coronavirus crisis took hold.

As such, almost two thirds (60%) of people working in the beauty sector are now self-employed, according to the survey by trade associations the British Beauty Council, British Association of Beauty Therapy & Cosmetology (Babtac), the National Hair & Beauty Federation (NHBF), and the UK Spa Association.

Among that 60%, two fifths (40%) use home salons or converted garages and rooms as opposed to renting or owning a salon space, as well as offering mobile services to clients, the report found.

For those who are self-employed, 62% choose to do so because of “career autonomy”, while familylife balance is also a major motive. Three in five workers have also found that they are earning more since becoming selfemployed, with 83% stating that they expect to continue working for themselves in the future.

“The survey findings make it clear that self-employment within the personal care sector is a trend that is here to stay,” said Victoria Brownlie, British Beauty Council’s chief policy officer.

“The freedom and autonomy that working in this way gives to practitioners – who are predominantly women – to balance their careers and other commitments, such as family, is impossible to ignore.”

Unregulated short courses and manufacturer-led courses accounted for just under two fifths (39%) of training undertaken by freelance beauty professionals, according to the report.

“As self-employment grows, it is likely that practical learning opportunities in salons will decline, creating a worrying skills gap,” Brownlie added.

“This represents a new challenge to maintain the visibility, standards, and level of service our sector needs to continue building its reputation with policymakers and wider society.”

Demand for cosmeceuticals grows as consumers prioritise brands recommended by professionals

The beauty landscape is changing, with physical appearance no longer a defining factor of beauty, according to Euromonitor International’s Voice of the Consumer Beauty Survey, which surveyed more than 20,000 people across 20 core markets.

The survey found that consumers now perceive “beauty” as looking healthy and being comfortable in your own skin. When it comes to making purchases, consumers are focusing on products with functional benefits as they look to ingredients and effectiveness rather than those that are on-trend.

Desire for scientifically formulated products that are effective, safe and transparent has also been the reason behind the increase in the demand for pharma, lab and dermocostmetic brands in the skincare industry.

When asked their reasons for turning to these types of products, consumers said it was for health and skin benefits (15%), because they were recommended to them by professionals (12%), and because they are far more effective than non-dermocosmetic products (8%).

Consumers are also prioritising prevention and protection when it comes to health and beauty, focusing on skincare, balanced diets, and active lifestyles to achieve this, the report found, as self-care and wellness boomed during the Covid-19 pandemic.

85% against reintroduction of animal testing for cosmetics in the UK

More than three quarters (85%) of Brits are against the reintroduction of animal testing for cosmetics in the UK, found research conducted by YouGov on behalf of animal protection organisation Cruelty Free International. With Home Secretary Priti Patel considering reintroducing animal testing for cosmetic ingredients in the UK for the first time in 23 years, this data revealed that most Brits are opposed to the decision.

More than half (65%) support a binding plan to phase out animal testing, and a further 66% would like to see the Government set a date to end the use of animal tests. A further 70% said they would find it unacceptable for testing on animals to still be taking place 90 years from now. 82% find it unacceptable for experiments on animals to continue where alternative non-animal methods exist, and 68% would support an investment strategy to accelerate the availability of alternatives.

Therapists working in care homes in England must now be vaccinated against Covid-19

As of November 11, hair and beauty professionals across England entering a CQC-registered care home for work or volunteering purposes must be vaccinated against Covid-19. The new coronavirus regulation applies to all visiting workers, including hairdressers, barbers, and beauty therapists.

However, there are some exemptions to the policy, including those who are medically exempt, visitors and people entering for an emergency, and religious leaders meeting somebody at the end of their life.
