A guide to treating salon clients who have blood-borne viruses

Jolene Young, beauty therapy learning assistant at Moray College UHI, Scotland, commented: “I agree with breaking the taboo on HIV and we can do that by engaging in much more education. I contacted the Terrence Higgins Trust charity for information, who were fantastic. Similarly, a discussion is needed on GP referrals as a few have said [therapists] should know if the treatment can or can’t be done on the client☹️ ”

Hygiene poverty: how to set up a beauty bank in your salon

Vic Jackson, owner of Mint Beauty, Hair & Holistic salon in Macclesfield, commented: “I started a Facebook campaign collecting feminine hygiene and personal care products to support our local food bank. Those shelves were pretty bare and because these items are classed as non-essential, they couldn’t buy them with the cash donations they received. It really raised awareness in the town and the support from clients was amazing. My feeling is that these products are absolutely essential and if there is no access to basics for personal hygiene then the impact on selfesteem and wellbeing of the service user is huge. I think this year, more than ever, people need to feel like they are helping and this is something most can afford to do and it will make such a huge difference to someone else’s life.”
