Never stop learning
The Science of Skin has been described as a scientific manual for all things skin. Annalouise Kenny, founder of Skin Philosophy, tells us the story behind the new book
What inspired you to write this book?
“In 2013, I recognised the need for more comprehensive information about advanced skin treatments. I wrote a manual that is now used in Level 4 courses. Since then, I have observed new skin conditions arising from lifestyle changes and realised that the industry needs more in-depth knowledge to address the reasons behind skin problems. During the lockdown, I began expanding on the original book.”
Who is the book for?
“The book is for experienced skin therapists or nurses looking to develop their knowledge of skin conditions. It’s also beneficial for new skin therapists, although the information may be overwhelming at first.”
What was your favourite part of writing the book?
“I love learning! After treating skin for over 23 years, I’ve noticed that a skin condition can arise due to reasons that haven’t been explored before. I find it fascinating and satisfying to discover the links between lifestyle and skin conditions through research. This is why there is never a permanent solution for skin conditions, as there is always new information to learn.”
What’s the most surprising thing you learned while writing your book?
“The understanding of skin has significantly evolved in the past 20 years. Concepts like combination skin, the impact of diet on skin health, and the causes of conditions like rosacea were not fully understood back then. It’s great that we have so much knowledge at our fingertips now.”
What was the most difficult part of writing the book?
“The hardest part of writing the book was finding the right balance of information. With 380 pages, I needed to keep the content easy to read and relevant for skin therapists while also providing the in-depth information that I enjoy. I recommend taking your time and reading every sentence, as there is valuable insight in each one.”
