Spotlight on... ZINC

Kezia Parkins takes a look at this powerful mineral and how it can be used in skincare

What is it?

Zinc is a trace mineral that holds many benefits when applied topically on the skin and taken internally. It is crucial for a healthy immune system, DNA synthesis, protein production, and overall growth and development, particularly during pregnancy, infancy and childhood.

“When it comes to skin health, this mineral is often overlooked, despite being able to transform client results,” says Hannah White, head of education and sales at skincare brand Monuskin and devices brand Carlton Professional.

How is it used in skincare?

Sun protection: “Many people are familiar with zinc oxide, a form of zinc that is usually the key ingredient in protecting the skin from UVA and UVB damage in broad spectrum SPFs as it creates a protective barrier between the skin and the sun,” says Nadia Aminian, senior aesthetician at The Taktouk Clinic in London and a finalist for Therapist of the Year at the Aesthetic Medicine Awards 2025.

Acne: “Zinc can play a major role in wound healing with its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Because of this, it is a key ingredient in acne treatments,” says Aminian, while White adds, “Zinc regulates sebum production, reducing excess oil and minimising clogged pores, which are common culprits behind breakouts.”

Inflammatory conditions: As zinc helps reduce redness, swelling and irritation and protects against free-radicals and environmental pollution, it can be a great tool for tackling inflammatory skin conditions like eczema.

Redness and sensitivity: “It is highly effective for treating acne, soothing sensitivity and calming redness, making it suitable for almost all skin types – particularly oily, blemish-prone and sensitive skin,” says White. “Zinc is also essential for cell production and DNA synthesis. Because of this, it can often can be found in face creams that help calm and soothe the skin.”

Ageing: “Zinc plays a vital role in skin healing, helping the regeneration of cells and supporting collagen production, aiding in the repair of damaged skin, reducing scarring and promoting an even, healthy complexion,” says White. “By supporting collagen production and skin repair, zinc promotes smoother skin texture and helps diminish signs of ageing.”

How can I introduce it into treatments?

Professional treatments using zinc can be incorporated throughout a client’s skincare journey, say the experts.

“Consider recommending zinc as part of a facial designed for acne-prone or oily skin to control sebum and minimise breakouts. Or one for sensitive or rosaceaprone clients to strengthen skin barrier function and protect against external aggressors,” says White. “It is also great to use post-extraction to soothe inflammation, reduce redness and accelerate healing.”

Amian adds, “Personally, I think the best form of zinc for skincare comes within a cream, SPF or a mask. I believe zinc works better when it is a leave-on product.”

What can it be combined with?

Generally well tolerated by all skin types, zinc can be combined with many other ingredients. “Because of its properties, zinc is often seen in anti-blemish products to help maintain oil production in the skin, to fight bacteria and to calm the inflammation that comes along with acne blemishes,” says Aminian. “Zinc with niacinamide is a great combo for skin with active breakouts, or pair is with azelaic acid for an oilier skin type.”

In acne patients, a topical antibiotic is normally prescribed before an internal drug and these topicals usually contain zinc for its anti-inflammatory and healing properties. Additionally, zinc oxide is typically mixed with iron oxide to create broad spectrum sunscreens.

“Educate your clients that consistent use of zinc-enhanced treatments, complemented by proper homecare, will yield lasting skin improvements,” concludes White.

“By harnessing the therapeutic properties of zinc, skincare professionals can deliver targeted, transformative treatments, offering visibly healthier, calmer and clearer skin for their clients.”
