GETTING SHIPSHAPE
Working on a cruise ship spa means adventure and a close-knit team. Ellen Cummings talks to Leanne Stuttard, the spa manager on the Norwegian Viva cruise ship, to find out how it all comes together
What is your background in the spa and wellness industry?
“I have over 10 years of experience in the cruise ship industry, starting as a certified beauty therapist in the UK. I specialised as a facialist and later became an international spa trainer, teaching therapists worldwide. Now, as a spa manager, I’m dedicated to sharing my knowledge and creating positive experiences for my team and guests.”
What inspired you to pursue a career on a cruise ship?
“I’ve always had a passion for beauty and wellness, and a desire for adventure and growth. Working on a cruise ship gave me an opportunity to develop my skills while travelling and meeting people from around the world.”
What does a typical day in the spa on the Norwegian Viva look like?
“My day starts by reviewing the schedule and ensuring everything is set for a seamless operation. We offer treatments like massages and facials, as well as thermal experiences such as salt rooms and vitality pools with ocean views. Throughout the day, I make sure we are delivering top-tier service and personalised recommendations to elevate guests’ wellness journeys.”
How do you ensure consistent quality and guest satisfaction in this setting?
“We focus on thorough training, regular team briefings, and personalised service. We use premium products like Elemis and Grown Alchemist and gather guest feedback to continually improve our offerings.”
What are the biggest challenges working in a spa at sea?
“Logistical challenges are a major factor, particularly with stock and equipment management. The guest base changes constantly, requiring us to be flexible. Weather conditions can also affect guest schedules, and working in a confined space with a close-knit team adds complexity, but these challenges also make the experience rewarding.”
How do you train your team to perform in a constantly changing environment?
“Norwegian Cruise Line focuses on continuous training and open communication. Regular workshops ensure everyone is up to date with the latest techniques and products, while team briefings keep us aligned on guest needs and expectations. We also encourage a supportive, collaborative atmosphere where team members can share insights and experiences.”
What qualities do you look for in therapists who want to work on a cruise ship?
“We look for a combination of technical skill, adaptability and excellent communication. It’s important that they are not only highly trained but also comfortable working in a dynamic, ever-changing environment.
“A strong work ethic, a positive attitude and the ability to work well within a close-knit team are essential. We also look for individuals who are passionate about guest service and able to provide a personalised, luxury experience, ensuring our guests feel valued and relaxed throughout their journey.”
What advice would you give to spa professionals considering a career on a cruise ship?
“Be adaptable and embrace the fast-paced environment. Strong technical skills are essential, but excellent communication and a passion for exceptional service are equally important. Working at sea offers unique opportunities, and it’s important to enjoy the experience while being part of a dedicated team.”
What trends have you noticed among cruise guests?
“There’s a growing interest in holistic wellness, with guests seeking aromatherapy, stress-relief massages and mindfulness experiences. Detoxifying treatments, fitness offerings and nutrition advice are becoming more popular, alongside personalised wellness plans.”
What are your goals for the future of the spa on the Norwegian Viva?
“I want to enhance the guest experience with bespoke wellness programmes, blending relaxation and rejuvenation. I also aim to incorporate sustainable treatments and advanced skincare technologies to keep the spa at the forefront of wellness trends.”
