Top tech shortlist

Owner of All About Mi and PB Therapist of the Year 2016 finalist Marie-Louise Coster has been shortlisted to compete in one of the industry’s most prestigious online nail art competitions.

Coster is one of 24 international techs selected for the Nails Next Top Nail Artist Season 6 competition following a gruelling selection process, which involved essay questions and a video audition.

“To say I am delighted is an absolute understatement”, comments Coster, who was lead manicurist for Yuhan Wang at London Fashion Week SS19 and worked on eight other shows, including an intimate trunk show for Victoria Beckham.

Judges for Season 6 include CND founder Jan Arnold, and other big-name techs including Valerie Ducharme, Gina Silvestro, Allie Baker, Lauren Wireman and So Yong Yu. The winner will be announced on June 1, 2019.

HELPING HAND

Mavala has released a Nail Care During Cancer Therapy brochure to help clients undergoing chemotherapy.

The document outlines six side effects of cancer therapy on the skin and nails, such as ridged, breaking, splitting or thickened nails, hyperpigmentation, discolouration and swelling, and recommends measures to address them.

It suggests products for use before, during and after cancer-care therapy, as well as providing useful tips such as wearing refrigerated mittens and socks to protect fingernails and toenails during chemo sessions. It ends with the positive message: “We hope that in those difficult times, Mavala will help you to feel better thanks to the few tips in this brochure. Our wish is that your beauty and your femininity become a force that will help you to overcome this hard time.”

Bethany Anne Denby , self-employed tech at Matisse Hair Studio in Bradford, NSI advocate and PB Awards Nail Professional of the Year 2018 finalist

My passion for nail art began at the age of nine when my mum and dad bought me a nail art kit for Christmas. Over the holidays, some of my mum’s friends were treated to my very first nail art creations.

To date, there have been four major highlights

in my career. The first was being nominated and chosen as the Student with the Most Creative Flare in Nail Art at Craven College in Skipton. The second was being awarded Top UK Tech 2016 at Nailympia London. The third, reaching the finals in the Nail Professional of the Year category of the Professional Beauty Awards 2018, and the most recent was being invited to join the NSI team as a nail advocate.

The greatest ongoing challenge I face as a nail tech is keeping my work fresh and imaginative and continually pushing the boundaries.

The best thing about working in the industry is the inspiration it provides. It’s a sector that is forever evolving. I hope that my work provides inspiration for other nail technicians and that they can draw something from it.

My favourite nail look at the moment is the gothic almond because of the shape, which can open up to so many different artistic ideas. You can either take this shape right to the edge or make it uber glamorous.
