News this month that loneliness and anxiety are both on the rise among UK adults shines a light on the fact that spas and salons have never been more important to their local communities. Not only are they spaces for clients to focus on mental and physical wellbeing, but beauty and spa businesses are often the hub of the community, bringing much needed conversation and healing touch to people’s lives.

Of course, providing a sounding board for clients can sometimes take its toll on therapists’ energy levels and, with an increasing number of beauty professionals now working as sole traders too, our work lives can often feel quite lonely as well. However, the beauty and spa industry is an incredibly supportive space and this month we share some inspiring stories and innovative advice from some of the leading spa directors, salon owners and nail techs working in the business today.

In our spa skincare feature on page 56, the amazing Tara Moore and Emma Pridding share their tips on how to find a brand that matches the ethos of your business, while on page 88, five of the biggest names in nails tell us the questions they get asked most often by other techs and the biggest lessons they have learned in their careers.

Then, in our lead interview, Katie White tells us how she built up her facial studios and training school business, Re:lax, and shares her advice for other therapists looking to take the leap and set up their own salon. Check out her tips on page 51.

Of course, there’s no better place than the Professional Beauty shows for coming together with the industry to share challenges, solutions and trends, so be sure to check out our Professional Beauty North preview from page 66, where you can see the education, launches and networking opportunities on offer in Manchester on September 29–30. See you there!
