New research this month shows that beauty and nail salon numbers are seeing strong growth across the UK, particularly in out-of-town locations, as demand for treatments remains high. However, business survival rates are not quite so strong, indicating a lot of turnover in the market as start-ups don’t always go the distance. Check out our news story on page 8 for the full breakdown.
Surviving in an increasingly competitive salon market means adapting to change while also remaining true to your unique brand and its values, and this month we talk to one therapist who has done exactly that. Find out how renowned facialist Sarah Brown adapted to an evolving market, building her skill set from spa and holistic therapies to encompass advanced aesthetics, in our interview on page 43.
Meanwhile, multi-site salon owner Karen Thompson has taken a different approach to the shift in client demand, collaborating with a range of external specialists to broaden the treatment menu in her five salons. The offer now encompasses diverse elements such as hypnotherapy and mental health coaching, as well as aesthetic treatments performed by a nurse practitioner. Find out how she made the transition work on page 56.

There are some new categories this year for individuals too, giving more outstanding professionals a chance to shine.
And of course this issue is also packed with features to help you grow your own business, from our in-depth look at the power of both antioxidants (page 46) and enzymes (page 58) in skincare, to an expert guide to treating nail infections (page 68) and advice on gearing up for the festive season (page 33), we’ve got you covered.
